Impressionism-Inspired Creative Writing Course Begins 4/5 at College of DuPage

Brighten your Spring with the Beauty of Impressionism While Unleashing your Creativity and Developing your Writing Skills at COD this April

Let the Ink Flow: Writing Inspired by Impressionism

Write creatively, inspired by masterpieces of impressionism. Like the Impressionist masters, you will freely express your impressions as you experience them, transcending the binding rules of grammar, logic and order. You may be amazed at the writing that flows from your pen! You will learn techniques to improve writing and creativity, and gain a new understanding of Impressionism. Featured Impressionist artists include: Munch, Monet, Pissarro, Seurat, van Gogh, Degas and Renoir. You will develop writing confidence and learn techniques to help overcome writer’s block. In this cross-disciplinary course, you will do writing exercises inspired by each featured artist.

Each week, we will look at slides of the featured artist’s work and discuss elements of the artist’s life that may have contributed to his artistry. We try different writing techniques that are inspired by these masterpieces. For instance, we will write a story that takes place in one of Monet’s landscapes. We take into consideration atmospheric effects such as light and fog, as the artist did, and how they may affect the elements of the story. We will also try stream-of-consciousness techniques to quickly sketch a story based on a particular aspect of Impressionism. Students have repeatedly told me how surprised they are to be able to produce the quality of writing that they do. This class offers a bit of escape from hectic everyday lives, to enjoy the beauty of art and to develop writing skills in a pressure-free environment.
