Local Science Teacher Chosen for NASA Education Advisory Board

St. Joan of Arc Science Teacher recognized by NASA

(Lisle) - With the popularity of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) classes, it’s important to have educators that are on the cutting edge of advancements in learning and applications of ideas. Tanya Anderson, a middle school science teacher at St. Joan of Arc Catholic School, fits the bill; she was selected, for a second time, to serve on a committee of educators for NASA’s National Board of “Next Generation” Science Learning.

The new “Infiniscope” program provides a virtual space that connects learners with educators who have cutting edge space exploration experiences, making the topic accessible and interactive for students. The Infiniscope team selected a group of 30 educators from around the country to evaluate and review Infiniscope products and provide feedback via storyboards and lessons to help ensure the program’s success. Anderson is one of the elite educators selected for the Board, which also includes educators from museums, after-school programs, and science centers.

Anderson teaches Physics to her seventh and eighth grade classes at St. Joan of Arc, and incorporates many of the lessons and progressive curriculum ideas obtained through her experience with NASA. “Last year SJA acquired two 3-D printers,” said Anderson. “For every chapter I teach, I include a 3-D project for my students. Before, they may have had to create a cell model using cardboard, dried noodles, beads, or other found objects. Now they can print the model using the 3-D printer.”

Bringing the design process into each unit allows students to use “Tinkercad”, a web-based program allowing educators to monitor students and assist with their 3-D designs. “My students do very well with the technology,” added Anderson. “This experience will help them be prepared for Engineering and Computer Design classes in high school.”
