JOLIET, IL — A man has been charged in his infant son's death, four years after the baby was found unresponsive at a Monee truck stop.
A warrant was issued in Will County Thursday for Kelsey Simmons, 35, charged in the death of Sevyn Simmons, his 2-month-old son. Simmons and the boy's mother told police at the time that they did not know why he had stopped breathing, Monee police said previously.
Sevyn died two days later of closed head injuries and blunt force head trauma, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, which classified the death as a homicide.
Just before 9 a.m. on Aug. 31, 2022, police were called to the truck stop at 5915 Monee-Manhattan Road for a report of an infant boy in distress and not breathing, police said.
The boy was in the care of his parents, Simmons and Dominique Scott, of Green Bay and Milwaukee, respectively. The parents told police that they had been staying overnight at the truck stop inside their company truck tractor semi-trailer before returning to Wisconsin.
Will County court documents show Simmons, now 35 and of Memphis, Tennessee, has been charged with three counts of murder/intent to kill, injure.
