Carjacking In Mokena: Man Charged, In Custody

The carjacking in Mokena happened Sept. 14 at the Gas N' Wash, 8810 W. 191st St.

MOKENA, IL — A 23-year-old man has been charged and is in custody after an armed carjacking in Mokena earlier this month. Tyron Harris has been charged with identity theft, being a felon in possession/use of a weapon, armed robbery, aggravated robbery, possession of a stolen vehicle, and aggravated vehicle hijacking.

The carjacking in Mokena happened Sept. 14 at the Gas N' Wash, 8810 W. 191st St. The victim went inside the station, and when he came back out, he was confronted by a man reportedly armed with a handgun, who demanded the victim's keys, wallet and phone.

The victim complied, and the man stole the car and fled. No one was injured in the incident.

Police Chief Steve Vaccaro said a suspect was identified within three hours of the incident, and he credited New Lenox Police Department for their assistance.

"Of course, we had to go through the investigation process to make sure we had a solid case," Vaccaro said at Monday's Mokena Village Board meeting.

The department was able to get a warrant for Harris' arrest, and he was taken into custody by the Gary, Indiana Police Department on an unrelated warrant.

According to the Will County Circuit Court website, Harris also had charges filed against him in July. Those charges from the Monee Police Department include drug possession, obstructing identification and possession of a stolen vehicle.
