District 159 Could Place Referendum On Ballot Tonight

Public comment will be allowed regarding a possible limiting rate increase during a special meeting at Mokena Elementary School.

MOKENA, IL - Public comment will be allowed during a special meeting called for tonight - Monday, Jan. 14 - regarding a possible referendum that could be placed on the ballot seeking a limiting rate increase for Mokena School District 159. The meeting is set for 7 p.m. at Mokena Elementary School, 11244 Willow Crest Lane.

A "community forum" is set to take place during the meeting before the board votes on the follow action item listed on the agenda:

"Resolution providing for and requiring the submission of the proposition of increasing the limiting rate for School District Number 159, Will County, Illinois, to the voters of said School District at the consolidated election to be held on the 2nd day of April, 2019"

According to slides included in the board's agenda packet, the limiting rate increase would amount to about $1.8 million a year under current plans. Approximately $0.30 will maintain current taxes and the board could approve a lower amount, the agenda notes state.

A school district presentation is also planned for the meeting. It will include slides of outdated facilities and current needs at Mokena Intermediate School, Mokena Elementary School and Mokena Junior High School.

If the resolution is passed tonight, the referendum would be on the ballot for voters in the district on April 2.
