Human Skull, Other Bones Found In Mokena Field: Sheriff

The skull and other bones were discovered Tuesday afternoon. A comprehensive search of the area was conducted Wednesday morning.

MOKENA, IL — Police are investigating after an apparent human skull and other bones were found in a Mokena field Tuesday afternoon, the Will County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.

The sheriff's office was initially called to Oakwood Drive and Townline Road around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, for possible human remains found.

Land surveyors were working in the field and found what appeared to be a human skull. Will County Sheriff's deputies arrived and completed an initial search of the property which revealed additional bones scattered throughout the field.

The recovered bones were turned over to the Will County Coroner's Office for processing and data checking of missing persons cases.

The coroner's office said it will conduct forensic testing by the University of Illinois Department of Anthropology and Forensic Odontology to determine the identity and gender of the remains.

Will County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations, Crime Scene Investigation, and Will County EMA Search and Rescue searched the field again Wednesday. Additional skeletal remains were found, all believed to be those of an animal or animals.

They were also sent to the Will County Coroner's Office, Will County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Elizabeth Matthews told Patch.
