UPDATED: July 4 Fireworks Are Go, Thanks to Pipe Fitters
The union donated $25,000 to put on Mokena's fireworks display for the second year running.

You won't have to leave Mokena on July 4 to see fireworks, thanks again to Pipe Fitters Local 597.
As they did last year, the union is donating $25,000 to put on the July 4 show, including fireworks, the sound system, a band, shuttle service for parking and the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry performing Civil War re-enactments, Village Administrator John Downs said.
And they're planning to keep helping out.

"We're very excited that the pipe fitters are very committed to this year and future years," Mayor Joe Werner said. "They basically said to us they want to continue to participate."
Although it paid for all of the $25,000 show this year and last, the union might not pay for everything next year and in future years, Werner said. A lot of that will be determined by the village's financial situation each year, he said.

The union's training center opened in Mokena in February 2005, according to the group's website.
"That organization has a great civic perspective and they've been a great asset to our community," Downs said.
Last year, the show was almost canceled due to the village's financial woes, but the union stepped in to sponsor.
Downs said the village is better financially this year than last, but that the $25,000 display wouldn't be a prudent expense right now.
Representatives of the union could not be reached for this story.
Mokena's popular July 4 parade is a separate affair put on by . The parade will start at 10 a.m. July 4, heading along Wolf Road from LaPorte Road to Granite Drive.
