Mokena Recreational Cannabis Sales Prohibited
The village board unanimously approved an ordinance prohibiting the sale of recreational cannabis in the village.
MOKENA, IL — Mokena is the latest community to prohibit the sale of recreational cannabis. The village said trustees unanimously approved an ordinance prohibiting the sale of recreational cannabis in the village of Mokena on Monday.
At the meeting, the village presented a summary of board comments, which included:
- "The potential revenue is not the driving force for the board's consideration of the issue."
- "The overall health and welfare of the entire community is the board's primary concern."
- The board remains committed to providing medical marijuana for patients in need."
"The bottom line is that it is not about the money," Mokena Mayor Frank Fleischer said. "It is about the quality of life in the village of Mokena."

The state's Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act was enacted into law earlier this year by the General Assembly and Governor J.B. Pritzker. The act legalizes recreational marijuana in Illinois beginning Jan. 1.
In August, nearby Frankfort also prohibited the sale of recreational cannabis.
