Mokena Residents Will Pay More for Water

Chicago is charging more for supplying Lake Michigan water, so Mokena residents will have to pay.

Mokena residents will see higher water rates beginning Jan. 1—an impact of Chicago charging more for supplying the village with Lake Michigan water.

The average bill will jump by $4.72, with 56 cents of that trickling to the village, $4.09 to Chicago, and 7 cents to Oak Lawn, Village Administrator John Downs explained.

The charge is increasing from $3.32 per 1,000 gallons used this year to $3.82 per 1,000 gallons in 2015. The overall rate—including Mokena’s expense for operating the water system—will jump by 59 cents, from $6.51 per 1,000 gallons, to $7.10.
