Park District Plans 39th Annual Halloween Hollow
This year's Halloween Hollow will be a little different, but will offer drive-in movies, decorating contests and a drive-thru trick-or-treat
MOKENA, IL — The Mokena Park District's 39th annual Halloween Hollow will still be held this year, just with some changes. Normally, the Halloween Hollow is a large event, so the park district has reimagined the event this year to host a series of Halloween events.
According to the park district, it will host several events from Oct. 9-Oct. 30. The schedule of events can be found below:
The Great Pumpkin Hunt

- Free event. Oct. 10-Oct. 29, the winner will be announced Oct. 30. The park district has hidden 20 pumpkins at local parks. While you're out, be on the look-out for these pumpkins, and if you find one, you can turn it in at the Administration Office for a small prize and a chance to win the Great Pumpkin Hunt raffle prize.
Drive-In Movies
- The movies will be held The Oaks Recreation & Fitness Center parking lot, and will begin at 7:15 p.m. It is $10 per vehicle. You can pre-register online, and spots are limited.
- Oct. 9 - "The Addams Family"
- Oct. 10 - "Hocus Pocus"
- Oct. 16 - "Jurassic Park"
- Oct. 23 - "Hotel Transylvania"
House of Frights Contest

- Decorate your home for Halloween in this free contest. Judging will be between 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 22 and Oct. 29, and will be based on creativity, theme, originality, musical effects, lighting and overall layout. You must register online by Oct. 16 to participate, and winners will be announced Oct. 30. Winners are determined in two categories: Amateur Ogres (those who have not won a prize previously) and Master Monsters (those who have won in the past).
Spooky Sidewalk Chalk Contest
- Decorate your driveway or sidewalk for this free contest, and send a photo of your artwork to info@mokenapark.com. You must register online by Oct. 16, and winners will be announced Oct. 30. Submissions will be posted on the park district's social media for the People’s Choice winner in each category. A Staff Choice winner will also be chosen. The categories are: best movie inspired, best family masterpiece, elementary artist (10 years or younger), most creative, and most spooky.
Drive-Thru Trick-or-Treat
- For this free event, you can dress up in your favorite costume and head to Main Park, 10925 La Porte Road, for a drive-thru trick-or-treat experience. The event will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 24. You can also decorate your car for the event. Trick-or-treating will be on a first come, first served basis; registration is not required.
