Summit Hill Spartans Join LWN Marching Phoenix for Epic Performance

The schools carried on a beloved tradition during the Lincoln-Way North varsity football game Friday, Sept. 19.

The Summit Hill Junior High Marching Band and Colorguard joined forces with the Lincoln-Way North Marching Phoenix on Friday, September 19 for the varsity football game. This annual tradition began several years ago to provide the junior high band members with the opportunity to experience the fun and excitement of performing at a high school football game.

The junior high students arrived at the LWN practice field where they were treated marching band drill practice by their Phoenix peers. Next, the Spartans joined the Phoenix on the practice field to create a large block from where they performed the National Anthem and LWN Fight Song. The Lincoln-Way North Band provided excellent peer mentoring and role modeling for the younger Summit Hill Junior High students.

By 6:30 p.m., the bands were again lined up and ready to take the field. The colorguard girls first joined the older girls high on the hill as the “Phoenix” to demonstrate that a phoenix overcomes all obstacles and then rejoined the band on the track. The combined groups performed for the pregame show and then entertained the crowd from the end zone for the first half of the game with such tunes as “Hey, Baby” and “Mortal Combat”. At halftime, the Marching Phoenix performed part of their 2014 field show, entitled “Home” while the junior high students watched attentively from the track. This event was another successful way that Lincoln-Way District 210 and Summit Hill School District 161 partner together to provide great experiences for students. The Phoenix Marching Band will continue to grow as the Summit Hill Junior High Marching Spartans move on in the future. Summit Hill District 161 serves the communities of Frankfort, Tinley Park, and Mokena.
