What is a Center for Independent Living (CIL)?

A Center for Independent Living (CIL) is a non-residential, community based organization run by people with disabilities who have a deep commitment to assisting other people with disabilities in achieving independence. Consumers are provided our services free of charge.

Achieving Independence and Mobility Center for Independent Living serves persons with disabilities, their families and the community in Du Page, Kane, and Kendall counties. Our mission is to empower persons with disabilities to effectively control and direct their lives through the services we provide, such as: 

  •  Information and Referral – Linking individuals with needed resources in their community 
  •  Peer Support/counseling – Provided in a group or individual setting; talking with others who have “been there.” 
  • Independent Living Skills Enhancement – Helping individuals improve on or gain skills they need to be independent. 
  • Advocacy – Individual and/or system such as obtaining benefits, securing services and fighting discrimination or Working with the general public to increase accessibility
