Aurora Man Faces Charges After Drinking Wine on Soccer Field, Driving Onto Playground: Cops

A 65-year-old Aurora man accused of drinking wine on a Batavia soccer field and then driving onto a school playground Monday afternoon faces DUI charges, according to a Batavia Police Department press release.

Stephen A. Wake, of 2976 Arbor Lane in Aurora, is charged with driving under the influence and driving under the influence with a BAC over .08.

Police were initially called to the soccer field at H.C. Storm School, 304 N. Van Nortwick Ave. in Batavia, at 3:31 p.m. for a report of a suspicious person. There they found Wake drinking a bottle of wine.

He told police he was dropped off by a friend and was there to watch soccer practice. The incident occurred during school dismissal time for H.C. Storm School, according to the news release. Wake was cited for having open liquor in a public place and released from the scene.

A short while later, police were again called to H.C. Storm School. They returned to find Wake had driven his 2012 Chevrolet Equinox onto a playground on the south side of the school, according to police.

Police said he failed standardized field sobriety tests. He was arrested on DUI charges.

Wake is expected in court on Sept. 17 at 9 a.m. at the Kane County Judicial Center, 37W777 Route 38 in St. Charles.
