Big Rock Begins Comprehensive Planning Project
Big Rock Begins Comprehensive Planning Project: Public Kick-Off Meeting, 3-11-13

Located in southwest Kane County, the Village of Big Rock is a small town community surrounded by an expanse of agricultural land and beautiful mix of natural spaces. Building on its community assets, CMAP's Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program is now working with Big Rock and Kane County to embark on an interactive, community-based process to update the Village’s comprehensive plan.
The process to update the comprehensive plan includes three phases. The first phase includes a detailed analysis of existing land uses, resources, and community facilities, as well as gathering initial public input regarding the issues and opportunities in the Village. The second phase consists of creating a shared vision and identifying specific goals and recommendations to achieve it. The third phase will develop an implementation strategy to put the plan’s recommendations into action. Together, the Village of Big Rock, Kane County, community stakeholders, and CMAP will explore opportunities in land-use planning, residential and commercial development, transportation, parks and open space, and numerous other aspects important to the Village’s prosperity.
Once complete, the Big Rock comprehensive plan will provide a framework to make informed investment decisions, address current community issues, and reach long-term goals to create a prosperous, sustainable community for generations to come.

HUD and CMAP build capacity for local planning
CMAP’s Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program, funded by a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Sustainable Communities Regional Planning grant, is helping over 80 local governments, nonprofits, and intergovernmental organizations to address local issues at the intersection of transportation, land use, and housing, including the natural environment, economic growth, and community development. In response to the LTA Year Two call for projects, CMAP received over 100 proposals from more than 80 applicants. Current projects include local comprehensive plans and more-specialized ones for housing, water, transit oriented redevelopment, and overall sustainability.
