Montgomery PD Joins Ranks For 2018 Illinois Speed Awareness Day
Police believe lives can be easily saved by being aware of speed on the road and understanding how speeding impacts a crash.

MONTGOMERY, IL — The Montgomery Police Department is joining agencies across the state for Illinois Speed Awareness Day on Wednesday, July 25, to be proactive in promoting safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians through education and enforcement. According to police, speed was the reason for 34.2 percent of all fatal crashes in Illinois during 2016, which was 396 deaths, or one life almost every day.
According to a release from MPD, speeding can have the following consequences in areas where you live:
- When a pedestrian is hit by a car at 20 MPH there is a 10 percent likelihood of being killed. At a speed of 30 MPH the percentage increases to a 50 percent likelihood of being killed.
- The higher the speed at impact, the more severe the injuries sustained.
- 37 percent of the speed-related crashes result in injuries.
- When speeding there is a greater chance that other road users will misjudge how fast you are traveling.
- Speeding extends the distance required to stop a vehicle in emergency situations.• Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to navigate safely around curves or objects in the roadway.
