Restaurant Owner Apologizes for Breastfeeding Incident

Nurse-In will be hosted at Big Fish Grille Saturday.

John Mathias, owner of Big Fish Grille, has apologized for his actions Sunday when a breastfeeding mother was asked to move to a different area or cover up. But apologizing isn’t the only thing Mathias is going to do. Big Fish Grille will host a Nurse-In at its location Saturday.

The first 50 nursing mothers to attend will be given a Big Fish onesie and all mothers who bring a child will receive a small token to show the restaurant’s appreciation for mothers everywhere.

“This past Sunday, we really pulled a #BigFishFail when one of our guests, a nursing mother, was made to feel less than welcome,” Mathias wrote on the restaurant’s Facebook page. “It took a lot of educating (in both constructive and not so constructive forms) from not only those in our community but around the world, and we realize that we not only made poor decisions on Sunday, but my own responses were not well thought out.”

Mathias declared his and Big Fish Grille’s support for the rights of nursing mothers. He is contacting local groups to set up training for team members on local statutes to ensure that everyone is aware of the rights and feelings of nursing mothers.
