Taste of Norway coming to Montgomery

Sample Norwegian food, music, crafts

Norwegian food, music and crafts will be featured at Taste of Norway, an annual Hostfest fall festival, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, 1233 Douglas Ave. in Montgomery.

The public is invited. Admission and parking are free.

Events open at the church's 10:15 a.m. worship service with music by the Fox Valley Norwegian Choir. The choir will return at 1 p.m. for a concert. Aurora resident Doris Pittman, St. Olaf choir director, directs the 15-member Norwegian choir.

At 11:30 a.m., lunch will be served and a craft market will open in the church's lower level. On the lunch menu are homemade smorbrod, open-faced sandwiches; fruit soup and ice cream with lingon berries. Additionally, homemade Norwegian cookies, desserts and baked goods will be offered.

Food-making demonstrations will include lefse, a soft flat bread buttered, sprinkled with sugar and rolled up and eaten with meals or as a snack; and krumkaker, a cone-shaped dessert eaten empty or filled with whipped cream .
Demonstrations of Norwegian crafts will include rosemaling, decorative Norwegian folk painting; wood carving and knitting. Scandinavian jewelry, gifts and knitted items will be available for purchase.

Hostfest sponsor is Sons of Norway Polar Star Lodge 5-472, a Norwegian-American group which meets monthly at the church.

Sons of Norway's mission is to promote and preserve the heritage and culture of Norway and to provide insurance and financial products to members
