West Nile-Positive Mosquitoes Found in Kendall County

The Kendall County Health Department states that the risk of becoming sick from a mosquito bite is low.

A batch of mosquitoes collected in a mosquito trap located in Plano yielded a positive test for the West Nile Virus, according to the City of Oswego. The test was conducted by the Kendall County Health Department.

The Illinois Department of Public Health also had two positive mosquito tests from its trap located in Oswego.

The Kendall County Health Department recommends to eliminate all areas of standing water, wear long sleeves and pants and use bug spray containing DEET when outside. Peak biting time for mosquitoes are from dawn to dusk

According to the KCHD, the chance that someone could become sick from a mosquito bite is low. The risk of severe illness and death highest for people over 50, but people of all ages can be affected.

The IDPH website states that no humans have been affected so far in 2015. However, 62 positive mosquito batches have been identified this year, as well as four positive birds. There are currently 19 counties that have had positive results.
