10-Year-Old Creates Petition to Save Naperville Halloween House

A march through Ashbury Oct. 24 to protest the homeowners association's decision is also planned.

Despite the Ashbury Homeowners Association putting the nix on Naperville resident Nick Thomas’ elaborate Halloween decorations, a few kids have banded together in an effort to save the display, which has been going on for several years.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Naperville fifth-grader Sara Marston, 10, created a petition to get the famed Halloween house back.

“The home in Ashbury has an awesome display of Halloween decor every year,” Marston wrote on the petition. “I absolutely hate that the neighbors are telling them not to do it!!! Sign this petition fast and you can help save this home!!!”

As of Oct. 12, the petition has 641 signatures and the goal is to get 1,000 by Oct. 24.

Marston and friends have also made signs and distributed handouts for a march through Ashbury Oct. 24 to protest the homeowners association’s decision.

“This house has been part of my life since I was little,” Marston told the Tribune. “It is not only a tradition for me, but it is a tradition for many other people. It’s not only me who is sad about it, but other people are going to be sad about it too.”

Neighbors had complained to the Ashbury Homeowners Association about traffic, noise and safety concerns brought on by the house. At its Sept. 21 meeting, the HOA created a “Holiday Decorations Rule” stipulating that a home’s holiday decorations can only take up 50 percent of the yard, excluding lights, and restricts the display to 30 days before and 30 days after a holiday.
