All Residents Deserve to Feel Safe

All People, of all Races, Should Feel Safe in DuPage County

All Residents Deserve to Feel Safe

These have been very tumultuous times throughout the United States, including in DuPage County and the cities that comprise District 5. After the horrific murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, protests and civil unrest have been witnessed from coast to coast. Naperville and Aurora were both affected by protests that turned into criminality as both cities were impacted by widespread vandalism, destruction, and looting.

We must continue to hold our police and law enforcement personnel to high standards. We can never allow those without integrity to carry a badge. We also must revisit and question the necessity of certain police tactics such as “choke holds” and “no knock” warrants. We simply must do better to assure that all members of our community feel safe when interacting with law enforcement.

While law enforcement should always be accountable to the public, we are all on the same team. We need to be respectful of law enforcement and the risks that they take on our behalf. Just as law enforcement should be held to high standards, so should all residents when they exercise their 1st Amendment rights. We should have no tolerance for those that attack our small businesses, vandalize our buildings, or threaten our police.

We need to work together, collectively, to improve public safety and the security for all of our residents. As a member of Naperville’s City Council, I recently supported a resolution that denounced racism and bigotry. I have also formed an organization called Safe DuPage that regularly holds public forums on matters that involve public safety. As either your Naperville City Councilman or DuPage County Board Member, I will continue to look for ways to build safer and stronger communities for all of our residents.

All people, of all races, should always feel safe in DuPage County.
