Christopher B. Burke Engineering, Ltd. Celebrates 10 Years of Biking to Work

CBBEL to donate one dollar per mile during June and July to Bikes for Lesotho

As the annual Chicago Bike to Work Week rolls around, Rosemont-based engineering firm Christopher B. Burke Engineering, Ltd. (CBBEL) is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its award-winning bike to work program.

To celebrate Bike to Work Week, CBBEL is again donating one dollar per mile biked during June and July to Bikes for Lesotho, an organization that has donated over 2,000 used bikes to the children of Lesotho, a country in Southern Africa.

Last year, CBBEL employees biked almost 5,000 miles, raising $3,500 or 140 bikes.

“Knowing that more miles meant a bigger donation is a great motivator for us,” said CBBEL President Christopher B. Burke, PhD, PE, D.WRE, Dist.M.ASCE. “We’re hoping for even more miles this year!”

Since the program’s inception in 2006, more than 150 employees have commuted over 250,000 miles, eliminating roughly 483,000 pounds of CO2.

“The Bike to Work Program is just one of CBBEL’s efforts to promote and practice environmental sustainability,” says Mike Kerr, Executive Vice President and co-founder of the Bike to Work program. “It allows us to decrease our carbon footprint one bike ride at a time.”

“CBBEL has really made it as easy as possible to ride to work,” says Jonathan O’Connell, co-founder of the Bike to Work Program. “From shower facilities to bike storage, to discounts on equipment – the incentive is definitely there.”

CBBEL also provides mileage reimbursement at $0.75 per mile, allowing employees to earn while they burn, as well as an annual bike giveaway and quarterly giveaways of vests, lights, flat tire kits, seat bags and more.

Previously a Gold status company, in 2014 the League of American Bicyclists awarded CBBEL “Platinum” status as a Bicycle Friendly Business, recognizing CBBEL’s efforts to encourage a more bicycle-friendly atmosphere for employees and honoring innovative bike friendly efforts.

Celebrating its 30th Anniversary in 2016, CBBEL is a full-service consulting engineering and surveying firm specializing in civil, transportation/highway, municipal, traffic, construction, water resources, environmental, structural and mechanical engineering. Find more information at cbbel.com.
