Closed Doors Helped Limit Damage During Naperville Garage Fire

Fire officials say the resident was advised to keep the overhead garage door closed.

NAPERVILLE, IL -- Naperville fire officials say a single-family home with a garage that caught fire Saturday would have sustained more damage if the resident had not followed instructions to keep an overhead garage door closed. The fire broke out at approximately 10:22 a.m. in the 900 block of Darius Lane, according to a press release from Naperville Fire Department Bureau Chief James Kubinski.

Kubinski said the resident called to report the fires and were told to make sure that all doors on the home stayed closed as they got out of the house, including the overhead garage door. When fire crews arrived at the scene, the blaze was mainly contained to the home's attached garage.

According to Kubinski, the closed garage door also contributed to the fact that the home was still habitable after the blaze.
