NAPERVILLE, IL — Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico called the damage and looting done in downtown Naperville Monday night "devastating" and "heartbreaking" in a Facebook post adding that the damage is "unfathomable" but "not insurmountable."

Naperville police say several stores were damaged and looted Monday night. They added that explosive devices and bricks were thrown at police, with one officer sustaining an injury.

Chirico, who attended a peaceful protest earlier in the day, wrote, "Violence, looting, and destruction of property is NEVER the answer. Change doesn’t come when you break glass and instigate riots, change comes when you work together peacefully to eradicate injustice."

Chirico went on to thank volunteers and members of the Naperville Chamber of Commerce and Naper Pride who came out early Tuesday to help with the cleanup efforts.

Chirico added, "The people who did this do not care about Naperville. They do not care about justice and peaceful reform or the conversation happening in our country right now. But we do. So now we begin the process of cleaning up and moving through this time in our community and country together."
