Grandma Sally’s is Your Go-To Place for a Hearty Breakfast

When you step inside , it’s like being caught in a time warp. 

The teal booths, red and aqua carpeting and wood paneled walls adds creates a throwback, cozy atmosphere that really does remind you of your grandma's era. It’s the typical, old-fashioned, family owned sit-down.

Enough about the décor. This column's focus is the grub and let me tell you, it's outstanding. Servers give you with large portions, bottomless cups of coffee and fantastic, friendly service.

To compliment your coffee (a bit expensive at $1.79, I thought), they offer a freshly stocked selection of gourmet coffee creamers. Take your pick from Irish cream, hazlenut, French vanilla or amaretto.

On this particular Tuesday morning, the place was empty – don’t expect that on a weekend. On Saturdays and Sundays, this Naperville restaurant is always jammed and a line of people file out the door.

After getting my coffee and trying the Irish Cream, I ordered Eggs Benedict ($7.19) which came with a side of hash browns.  I also sprung for a side of biscuits and gravy for $3.79. I know I wouldn’t finish it all, but they’re my favorite! (Remember my cravings?)

As expected, I didn’t finish all the eggs, but I made sure to clean my biscuits and gravy plate. I thought those biscuits would be the best seller of the restaurant, but I was wrong. According to owner Dimitrios Kanellopoulos, the omelets and skillets are the top sellers.

My two sons were with me for breakfast. One ordered cereal ($3.49) and a side of bacon ($3.19). I thought that was an expensive meal for a four year old who didn't eat half of it. My oldest ordered the “French Connection,” which came with juice or milk and two pieces of French toast (boy were they thick) and a side of bacon for only $3.85.

Although breakfast is the restaurant's busiest time of day, Grandma Sally's does serve lunch and dinner. It has soups, salads, sandwiches and entrees that are to die for! I’ve personally never had a bad meal there.

“We’ve been open for 27 years and I just love it,” said Kanellopoulos.

The best part? The free lollipop you can grab on the way out!
