NAPERVILLE, IL — A Chicago man has been sentenced to 15 years in jail for the strangling of a woman in her Naperville home in 2018. Police say Michael Spivey, 48, forced his way into the home of a woman who was his ex-girlfriend and choked her until she was unconscious.

According to police, Spivey first rang the woman's doorbell "several times" on the night of March 24, 2018, and then approached her car with a tire iron in his hand. It was then that the woman reportedly allowed Spivey into her home, where he strangled her and left her lying unconscious, authorities say.

Spivey has been in custody since April 12, 2018. He must serve 85 percent of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

At the time of the attack, Spivey was on parole after being sentenced to 45 years in prison for a 1993 murder in Cook County.

DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said, "After serving his prison sentence but while still on parole for murder, Mr. Spivey viciously attacked his former girlfriend, choking her to unconsciousness. Thankfully Mr. Spivey fled the scene when confronted by another occupant of the home. This alone may have saved her life."
