Officials say the fire was caused by an unattended stovetop appliance.

NAPERVILLE, IL — An unattended stovetop appliance is to blame for a fire that tore through a three-story apartment building in Naperville Wednesday afternoon. According to a press release, more than two dozen firefighters responded to a report of black smoke in the 1300 block of Modaff Rd. around 1:30 p.m.
Fire officials say crews went inside the burning building and found "heavy smoke coming from behind the door of a second floor unit." Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze and any other active fires in the building within 30 minutes.
The residents who were home during the fire got out safely, according to the press release. One resident who was displaced from their apartment was not home at the time of the fire. They were given lodging by the American Red Cross.
