Naperville Cub Scouts Perpetuate Butterfly Garden Eagle Project

Service Project Benefits Elementary School

Cub Scouts Give Back

On Saturday, May 12, Cub Scout Pack 444 dodged raindrops and performed spring clean-up of the butterfly garden at Meadow Glens Elementary School in Naperville. Three Scouts participated in the event, which included pruning/trimming existing perennials, weeding, and raking. The Pack also refreshed the garden with 10 new plants (four hollyhocks and six pentas), fertilized the entire garden, and spread fresh mulch.

The three participating scouts were Danny Stockdale (Webelos I, grade 4), Carter Gorrell (Bear, grade 3) and Akash Bhatt (Wolf, grade 2). All are students at Meadow Glens Elementary School.

The garden is used primarily by Meadow Glens second graders, who study Painted Lady caterpillars each spring as they go through metamorphosis and then release them into the garden as butterflies.

The Meadow Glens butterfly garden was first installed in August 2016, as an Eagle project by Cameron Hayes from Boy Scout Troop 222. Between the connection to Scouting and the personal connection to these current and former Meadow Glens second graders, the Pack realized this was a natural fit for a service project.

Pack 444 has been chartered by Meadow Glens Home & School since 1989.
