Naperville Elects First New Mayor in Over Two Decades

WGN projects Steve Chirico as winner in four-way mayoral race.

WGN-TV News projected Steve Chirico as Naperville’s first new mayor in over two decades.

The lifelong Naperville resident and businessman handily trounced his opponents capturing 60 percent of the vote in a four-way race, according to unofficial vote tallies from DuPage and Will Counties.

Chirico built an early lead after the polls closed and held it through the evening.

Doug Krause followed at distant second garnering 30 percent of the vote, and Martin Walker (8 percent) and Jim Haselhorst (2 percent) coming in third and fourth respectively.

Results become ”official” after validation and counting of provisional and grace period ballots (within 14 calendar days of the day of the election) and after canvass has been completed (7 calendar days from the completion of validation).

The mayoral race boosted voter turnout in Naperville, with two precincts sampling at 12 percent and 15 percent of eligible voters showing up at the polls in the early afternoon, an elected official told the Chicago Tribune.
