Naperville Officials: Smoke Testing Of Sewer System To Begin

Naperville officials are notifying residents of smoke testing in the city's sewer system to detect defects.

NAPERVILLE, IL -- Starting June 12, the City of Naperville will be conducting smoke tests throughout the city's sewer system to detect any defects. The testing is expected to take about four weeks, pending weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

Air combined with non-toxic smoke is forced into the sewer lines to find leaks and connections to storm water systems, according to a press release. As a result of possible leaks, smoke will be visible coming out of the ground where there are defects in the lines.

Work will begin on Monday, June 12, in the Downtown and surrounding subdivisions. People in the area should expect to see smoke coming out of various places, including places with defective plumbing and sewer vent stacks of homes and businesses.

"The smoke is non-toxic, creates no fire hazard, leaves no residue, dissipates quickly and is harmless, although those with respiratory issues may wish to take extra precautions such as leaving the home for a few hours until testing is complete," the press release said.

Residents will receive door hanger notification cards prior to testing in their area.
