At their February 27, 2020 meeting, the Naperville Park District Board of Commissioners passed a resolution that promotes the importance of good sportsmanship District-wide. Actions authorized by the resolution include the following:

  • Observe National Sportsmanship Day annually on the first Tuesday of March
  • Remind participants, coaches, parents and spectators of the District’s expectations related to conduct and good sportsmanship through training, program materials and a variety of media
  • Create awareness in the community of the District’s emphasis on good sportsmanship and its benefits for everyone.

The Institute for International Sport established National Sportsmanship Day in 1991 to promote the values of sportsmanship and fair play through education and sport. The day is observed annually on the first Tuesday of March, which will occur this year on March 3, 2020, close to the time when the District’s spring athletic leagues begin.

Participants in the District's athletic programs learn and not only practice athletic skills, but also social skills, teamwork and good sportsmanship. Observance of National Sportsmanship Day will reinforce the District's commitment to the sportsmanship initiative, and supports the District’s core value of Personal Growth and Enrichment.
