Naperville To Stop Using 'Water Street District' After Dispute

The name "Water Street District" is exclusively owned by Henderson, Nevada, officials said.

NAPERVILLE, IL --- Naperville's erstwhile "Water Street District" will have to get a new name after the city's use of the name was challenged by Henderson, Nevada. Officials in Henderson recently filed a trademark dispute and threatened a lawsuit in 2017 if the cities couldn't come to an agreement, Chicago Tribune reports.

Naperville officials recently decided that they would cease to use the phrase "Water Street District" to describe the burgeoning commercial strip along water street that surrounds Hotel Indigo. The decision came after the city learned that Henderson has the sole rights to the name that are protected by the U.S. Patent Office.

Naperville's agreement not to use "Water Street District" means the city will not be considered in violation of any trademark. It also means that Naperville can't use the phrase "Water Street District" in ads, on maps, menus, newsletters, city guides, or on any merchandise.
