Old Nichols Library On Illinois Most Endangered Sites List
The library was placed on the list as its partial demolition looms.

NAPERVILLE, IL -- Old Nichols Library, an iconic part of Naperville's history, has been added to the 2018 list of Most Endangered Historic Places In Illinois. Built in the late 19th century, the beautiful brick property at 110 S. Washington made the Landmarks Illinois roundup as it faces demolition to accommodate new developments in the city.
The building, which was named a local landmark in 2017, represents a milestone in Naperville's past as it housed the city's first library. After the library closed, the building served as a church for two decades.
In 2016, a developer bought the building and is moving forward with plans to convert it into a mixed use facility. In early April, a construction fence was placed around the building and initial excavation had begun.

Developers won't be permitted to make any changes to the building's facade and foyer, due to restrictions established in 1995. There's nothing to stop them, however, from moving forward with demolishing other parts of the former library.
Preservationists and community members are working to rescue the Old Nichols Library. On Facebook, a page called "Save the Old Nichols Library" has more than 600 likes. A petition to save the library has more than 1,400 signatures. It pleads with Mayor Steve Chirico and the city council to "prevent the demolition or alterations of this building, which is an integral piece of the fabric of Naperville."
