Plainfield Central Chemistry Teacher Allegedly Traded Grades For Oral Sex

The chemistry teacher took oral sex from a teenage student in exchange for better grades, a prosecutor said.

A Plainfield Central High School chemistry teacher provided a student with answers to tests and assignments in exchange for oral sex, a prosecutor said.

Brian D. Smith, 32, faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of trysting with a teenage student in a school supply closet.

Smith, a Joliet resident and Plainfield Central teacher for the past year, contacted the teen through a website called Whisper, said Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Fillipitch. Smith claimed to be someone named “Andy,” and asked the teen, “Do you think Mr. Smith is sexy?” and “Do you know how to get a better grade in Mr. Smith’s class?” Fillipitch said. Smith and the student then began communicating through the instant messaging application Kik, she said.

Smith, a graduate of Trinity Christian College, sent the teen a picture of his penis, Fillipitch said, and she sent him photographs of herself showering.

Smith then began filling in or changing the answers on the girl’s assignments and on a test, Fillipitch said. After the test, the teen followed him into a supply closet and performed oral sex on him, she said, and cried when Smith was finished. The teen later explained she was afraid Smith would fail her if she did not perform the sex act, the prosecutor said.

Smith confessed to receiving oral sex from the student and to sending her the picture of his penis, Fillipitch said.

Smith’s wife attended his bond hearing Friday afternoon. The couple has three young children, said his attorney, Daniel Tiernan.

Judge Cory Lund set Smith’s bond at $600,000. Prosecutors wanted $1 million.

“This defendant violated a sacred trust,” Fillipitch told the judge.
