NAPERVILLE, IL — Teachers in Naperville's District 203 may not be in classes for long at the start of the school year, if they do not reach a contract agreement, Chicago Tribune reports.

In a recent update on its website, the Naperville Unit Education Association (NUEA), which represents the District 203 instructors, expressed that it "does not intend to return to school on August 19 without a settled agreement." Contract negotiations have been ongoing for months, with district and union officials primarily bumping heads over compensation and family leave.

On Aug. 2, hundreds of District 203 educators and activists donned red shirts and gathered outside Naperville North High School to march in support ahead of the school district's board of education meeting.

Both sides will come together on Aug. 9 and Aug. 16 to negotiate further. If they do not reach an agreement, they will meet again Aug. 17 and Aug. 18 to continue bargaining.

On its website, District 203 wrote that the board of education "is confident students can return to the classroom this fall while we continue to meet with the NUEA to reach a fair and fiscally responsible contract."
