1 Dead In 5-Vehicle Crash On I-80: Police

A 28-year-old man from New York died when his semi-truck caught fire, police said.

NEW LENOX, IL — A 28-year-old truck driver died when his truck caught fire after a five-vehicle crash Wednesday on Interstate 80, Illinois State Police said. Sukhwinder Singh, of New York, was pronounced dead at the scene, while four other drivers were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

Three semi-trucks and two cars collided on I-80 westbound, just east of I-355, at 4:26 p.m., police said.

Just before the crash, Singh and the driver of a second truck were driving in the center lane, while a third truck and two cars were driving in the left lane, according to police.

When everyone except for Singh stopped for traffic, his truck struck the rear of the truck in front of him, causing that truck to veer into the left lane and hit the side of the third truck, police said. The two cars then struck the rear of the third truck.

Both Singh's truck and the truck in front of him caught fire. The lead truck overturned on its passenger side, but its driver was able to escape. Singh, however, was trapped as his truck burned, police said.
