The hospital also recently started offering severe coronavirus patients convalescent plasma therapy, which is a clinical trial treatment through the Mayo Clinic. According to the hospital, the treatment uses antibodies from plasma donated by individuals who have recovered or are in the process of recovering from the coronavirus. The plasma is then transfused into patients currently fighting the virus. The nationwide study is led by researchers at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

The first patient received their treatment at the hospital on April 28. Now, Director Of Marketing and Community Relations Debra Robbins told Patch that 14 patients have received convalescent plasma as part of the ongoing clinical trial.

Robbins also shared that the hospital has now resumed elective surgeries and procedures.

"This is excellent news for patients who were forced to postpone their treatment for the last several weeks due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic," Robbins said. "We’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that it is absolutely safe to come to the hospital. Patient safety is our No. 1 priority at Silver Cross. It guides every decision we make, and it reaches every corner of our hospital."

Robbins said that there are rigorous safety measures in place, including universal masking, temperature checks for all staff, volunteers, patients and visitors, restricted visitation, and tested all surgical patients for the coronavirus.

"Some experts have estimated that nearly one in three Americans have delayed seeking care during COVID-19, including some suffering from truly life-threatening issues," Robbins said. "Getting treatment and taking care of your health can’t wait. Because of our commitment to safety, it is safe to come to Silver Cross for any type of health concern."
