NEW LENOX, IL — Have you ever noticed the volunteers in bright yellow vests assisting at community events throughout New Lenox? Those dedicated individuals are members of the Village's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)—and their work goes far beyond event support.
New Lenox CERT is now accepting applications for its upcoming basic training course, offering residents the chance to build valuable emergency response skills while serving their community.
The free program educates citizens about disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response skills. These skills allow members to assist during disasters when first responders are not immediately available. Course graduates are then welcome to continue on with the CERT program, which consists of monthly training sessions and assisting at a variety of community events.
CERT volunteers receive specialized instruction designed to prepare them for effective action during emergencies and disasters. Training topics include disaster preparedness, basic search and rescue, first aid, fire safety, and team-based emergency response fundamentals. Members learn how to help their neighbors, support first responders, and contribute to community resilience when additional assistance is needed.
"The CERT program empowers everyday residents with the skills and confidence to step in during critical moments," said Simon Harris, New Lenox CERT Program Coordinator.
"Whether supporting our first responders or helping neighbors during a crisis, CERT members play an essential role in keeping the community safe."
The next CERT Basic Training Program is taking place in September.
All classes will be held at New Lenox Village Hall, 1 Veterans Parkway.
By the end of the program, participants will gain the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to assist during emergencies, support local response operations, and help protect the well-being of the New Lenox community.
CERT members must be over the age of 18. Those under the age of 18 must have consent from a parent or guardian. Members will be required to pass a criminal history and background check.
Applications take approximately three to five business days to process.
The training program is entirely free to participants.
