April is Counseling Awareness Month!

Life can sometimes be hard but fortunately, there is a profession dedicated to providing help.  Counseling professionals come with a variety of credentials but they are all equipped to provide help to individuals in need.  Although fear, embarrassment, or misconceptions often keep people from seeking counseling, most all people who have ventured into a psychiatrist’s, psychologist’s, social worker’s or professional counselor’s office find relief and hope that whatever problems they may be experiencing can get better.

Some common reasons people seek counseling are anxiety or depression, grief, excessive stress, family or parenting distress, divorce, relationship/interpersonal conflicts, low self-confidence or esteem, loneliness, and identity issues to name but a few.  Counseling is a confidential, collaborative process designed to help clients realize their strengths and use them to find creative solutions to help them overcome, accept or resolve any issues they may be facing.  Counselors assist clients in exploring their thoughts and feelings in order to gain insight into their issues.  They also help clients learn new skills and find new ways of looking at situations that will be useful when new situations arise.
