Eva (pronounced A-vuh) Perino runs The Grounds, a cozy coffee shop in a North Carolina college town. She is also single—and seemingly proud of it.
Eva has a successful business, a home and a group of regular customers who play great supporting characters in the play of her life. She keeps a blog that boasts her love of singlehood and uses it to keep track of her thoughts and escapades on her personal journey towards happiness-single or not.

This story, which has Chick Lit written all over it, is actually a quaint story about how both deep love and deep loss affect our lives. Eva’s loss of her parents at an early age is certainly reflected in her need to show the world (quite heroically in her eyes) that she is, in fact, okay.
As the reader follows her through her journey, it’s easy to fall most in love with her coffee shop clan. Minerva, her best friend, is a flawed but loyal character who has a particularly amusing run-in with the Mother-in-Law from Hell.

Car Talk Kenny represents more than meets the eye, and The Grounds itself becomes a character that brings Eva happiness and hardship that never fails.
Overall, the book is a quick and thoughtful read. I recommend this book to anyone who can appreciate a good cast of characters while one’s stomach growls at the thought of some of Eva’s delectable muffin recipes.
