Creative Minds Sought For New Lenox Gingerbread House Contest

Put your creativity to the test with a chance to win a little holiday cash. Deadline to register is Dec. 2.

NEW LENOX, IL — Bakers, sweets decorators, architects—anyone with a plan for a gingerbread house (or really any "structure") — the Village of New Lenox wants to see what you've got.

As part of the Christmas in the Commons celebration, officials invite individuals, families, businesses, and organizations to get in on the fun, with a $100 prize on the line for the best finished product.

Participants must register by Dec. 2. Submissions must be delivered on Friday, Dec. 16, between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. If you're unavailable during this window, an appointment can be made for submission drop-off by calling the Village Hall. All entries will be put on display the weekend of Dec. 17 and 18 at Christmas in the Commons. Entries will be displayed for viewing in the heated tent in front of the Village Hall.

It's a popularity contest to determine the winner, with viewers casting their votes one of two ways:

  1. "Liking" the respective submission on the Village's Facebook page, with each "Like" counting as a vote.
  2. Scanning the QR code next to each entry at Christmas in the Commons, which will take voters to a form to make their picks.

First, second, and third place prizes will be awarded in the amounts of $100, $75, and $50, respectively. Winners will be contacted on Dec. 20. Entries will be disposed of following the display period unless the participant requests otherwise in advance.

Play by the rules:

  • Entry bases may be no larger than 18”x18.”
  • Entry is not required to be a house. Other structures are permitted. Structures must be constructed from a majority of edible materials. Non-edible materials may be used for the structure's base.
  • Structures must not contain materials that require refrigeration (including icing made with eggs, butter, or milk).
  • Structures should be created on a solid, sturdy base that will allow for transport and movement. Base suggestions include heavy cardboard, foam core, wood, or a baking sheet. If cardboard is used, it should be covered with aluminum foil so that it does not get soggy.

Don't forget to register by Dec. 2!
