Former Sheriff Paul Kaupas was sent a letter threatening him, his family and others with death, sources said.

Former Sheriff Paul Kaupas received an anonymous 10-page letter threatening to kill him, his family and others, sources said.

The letter also named retired Deputy Chief Nick Ficarello, who ran for sheriff last year, Ficarello’s wife, Barb, and retired Undersheriff Marty Nowak, according to the sources, all of whom wished to remain anonymous.

Kaupas confirmed he received the letter but declined to discuss it.

One of the sources said the sheriff’s department was taking the anonymous letter “very seriously” and was handling the investigation of who wrote and sent it.

The sources also said the letter references the 1990 disappearance of Robin Abrams, who was fired from her job as a county deputy shortly before she vanished. Abrams filed a federal lawsuit to contest her firing. The lawsuit was pending when she disappeared.
