New Lenox Resident Targeted In Jail Phone Scam Hours After Their Child's Arrest: NLPD

The resident's adult child had been arrested, and someone called demanding $800 for an ankle monitor and their release.

NEW LENOX, IL — A New Lenox resident whose adult child had been arrested was recently targeted in a phone scam demanding payment related to their child's release, according to New Lenox police reports.

Police were called Jan. 21 to the 600 block of Oxford Court, for a report of deceptive practices. The caller told police that five hours after their adult child had been arrested, they began receiving phone calls from an anonymous number. The resident answered one of the calls, and spoke with an unknown man who claimed to be from the Will County Sheriff's Office.

The man told the resident that they needed to pay $800 via Apple Cash for an ankle monitor for their child to be released from jail.

The resident made payments of $400 and $434. The caller told them the payments had not gone through, and requested additional payments.

The resident said they'd bring cash to the Will County Sheriff's Office, and the caller said they would not accept cash. The victim then realized the call was a scam.
