New Lenox Resident Targeted In Will County Sheriff Warrant Scam
The person was told they had a warrant out for their arrest for missing a court date, and needed to pay $400 to remedy it.
NEW LENOX, IL — A New Lenox resident was targeted in a phone scam alleging there was a warrant for their arrest related to a missed court date.
New Lenox police were called March 13 to the 400 block of Pine Street for a deceptive practices complaint. The victim told police they had received several calls from an unknown number.
The victim answered, and spoke to a man who claimed to be from the Will County Sheriff's Office Warrants Division. The caller told the victim that there was a warrant for their arrest due to missing a federal court date.

The victim questioned the caller, insisting that he call back from a "work phone" to prove he was calling from the sheriff's office.
The victim then received a call from a number denoted as Will County Sheriff's Office on caller ID.

The caller told the victim to deposit $400 in a Chime account to have the warrant canceled.
The victim made the deposit at Walgreens, 466 Nelson Rd. The scammer then requested more money. The victim then realized it was a scam, and contacted police.
The incident is under review for assignment or case closure.
