New Lenox Student Qualifies For State GeoBee
Benjamin Carlson, a seventh grader at Martino Junior High, has been named as one of the 100 qualifiers in the state.
NEW LENOX, IL — A seventh grader at Alex M. Martino Junior High School in New Lenox has qualified for the Illinois State GeoBee. Benjamin Carlson has been named as one of the 100 qualifiers in the state.
All students wishing to become state qualifiers took an online test, and the top 100 scoring students were chosen to compete at the state level.
The state GeoBee was supposed to be held March 27 in Normal, but all locations have now been switched to an online format due to COVID-19 concerns.

According to National Geographic, which hosts the GeoBee, state champions will receive a medal, $1,000 in cash, and a trip to Washington D.C. to represent their state in the national championship.
The National Geographic GeoBee championship will be held May 18-21 at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington D.C.
