Vote: Should Senior Housing Go Near Berkot's?

The New Lenox Village Board meets tonight and there will be a public hearing regarding a senior housing development planned for a 3-acre site near the Calistoga Plaza. There's a need for local senior housing, but neighbors in that area don't like the plan

Is a 3-acre lot near the Berkot's Super Foods shopping center a good place for senior housing? A local developer thinks so, but the neighbors in the adjacent subdivision have been very vocal with their opposition.

The New Lenox Village Board meets at 7 p.m. tonight, March 12, at and a public hearing regarding this development is on the agenda.

Developer William Bolker has cited support from New Lenox Township, which operates a senior housing facility that has a waiting list of at least 70 residents. He also resolved issues with parking and green space the village staff had with his plan.

The private companies funding the project would receive federal tax credits. To receive those credits, though, the project must meet certain Fair Housing Act and IRS standards that include the age and income restrictions.*
