When a subordinate presents a problem to me and asks for my help in solving the problem, I frequently do not help them. Instead I ask them to think about at least two possible solutions and bring those solution possibilities to me with their opinion of which solution is best, and why it is best.
Guess what! They usually arrive at a decision on their own. And in the process, they improve their self-esteem and decision making skills. And they begin solving problems on their own rather than taking up my time to help them solve a problem.
