Man Charged In Beating That Sent Victim To Hospital: MG Blotter

Assault charges after damage to a slot machine and a ruse burglary averted on the Morton Grove police blotter from Oct. 28 - Nov. 28

MORTON GROVE, IL — The following information comes from the Morton Grove Police Department as a record of police activity and those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

INCIDENTS

HOME BURGLARY
A resident in the 5700 block of Reba Street reported on Oct. 27 that they returned home to find their house had been ransacked. It appeared someone had gotten in through an unlocked basement window.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A Parkside Avenue resident reported on Nov. 2 that someone had opened up a Paypal credit card using their information.
  • A Newcastle Avenue resident reported on Nov. 7 that someone fraudulently wrote nine checks totaling nearly $9,400 from a business account.
  • A Marmora Avenue resident reported on Nov. 18 that someone had tried to open a Verizon account using their information.
  • A Neenah Avenue resident reported on Nov. 19 that they had been getting packages over the past two weeks for things that they had not ordered. Someone also charged a credit card belonging to the resident to make a purchase and send an item to their house.
  • A Sayre Avenue resident reported on Nov. 24 that multiple businesses had been sending mail saying there were active balances on credit cards that the resident had not opened.

HOME BURGLARY ATTEMPTS

  • A resident of the 5400 block of Warren Avenue reported on Nov. 7 that they believed a man had been trying to trick her into a ruse burglary. The resident was sitting at a kitchen table when a newer model white sedan drove past the house slowly before backing up and stopping. An unidentified man got out of the car and came to the front door. “You don’t remember me do you? My father installed your roof 2 years ago,” the man said. The resident became suspicious a family member installed the roof five years ago. The resident explained it, and the man at the door responded, “Oh, I meant your neighbors roof.” The resident told the man a family member also installed that roof. The unidentified man then offered to fix "damaged concrete." The resident refused and shut the door, believing that the man was attempting a burglary or scam.
  • A resident in the 8800 block of Luna Avenue reported on Nov. 14 returned home to find their porch lights had been unscrewed and it appeared someone had unsuccessfully tried to pry open the front door.

STOLEN CAR
A resident in the 8400 block of Morton Ave reported on Nov. 8 a car was stolen after it was left running in the driveway with the keys in the ignition.

SHOPLIFTING

  • An unidentified man stole a jacket on Nov. 9 from the TJ Maxx, 7250 Dempster St., by placing it under the jacket he was already wearing and walking out of the store.
  • Three unidentified people stole various items worth about $1,100 from the TJ Maxx on on Nov. 10.
  • Staff at the Menards reported on Nov. 15 that an unidentified man had stolen a hooded jacket.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • On Nov. 10, someone smashed the front passenger window of an SUV parked in the LA Fitness lot in the 6800 block of Dempster Street and stole a black leather purse that had been on the front passenger seat.
  • A shopper at Walgreens in the 5700 block of Dempster Street on Nov. 10 reported that someone had smashed the front driver's side window of their car and stolen a purse containing an iPhone.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD
A credit card that may have been dropped at the BP gas station at 5601 Dempster Street was used to make multiple purchases at unspecified locations prior to a Nov. 12 report.

TIP THEFT
Staff at the Starbucks, 6763 Dempster St., reported on Nov. 19 that someone had stolen a pair of tip jars placed on the side of the cash registers.

HOME BURGLARIES

  • Someone ransacked the upstairs of a home in the 9300 block of Central Avenue prior to Nov. 21 after entering through a living room window. It was not known if anything was stolen at the time of the report.
  • A resident in the 9100 block of Parkside Avenue returned home on Nov. 21 to find pry marks on the entrance to their home. The interior had been ransacked by unknown people, with cash and jewelry stolen.

TIRE THEFT
Someone stole all four tires from a vehicle parked in the 5800 block of Carol Avenue prior to Nov. 21.

WALLET THEFT
A patron at Menards reported on Nov. 24 that someone had stolen their wallet while they were bagging items in the checkout line.


ARRESTS

Steven M. Higgins, 59, of the 9000 block of Mansfield Avenue, Morton Grove, was arrested on Oct. 23 and charged with aggravated assault, assault and criminal damage to property after reportedly damaging a video poker machine, trying to punch a person and driving a vehicle toward a person as he fled the scene outside a bar in the 5700 block of Dempster Street.

Besard Perovic, 28, of the 5800 block of Crain Street, Morton Grove, was arrested on Oct. 30 and charged with criminal trespassing after refusing three verbal orders to leave a person's property in the 5800 block of Crain Street.

Ali Amin, 34, of the 8000 block of Kilpatrick Avenue, Skokie, was arrested on Nov. 1 following a traffic stop in the area of Capulina and Ferris avenues and charged with driving under the influence after an officer witnessed him throw a glass bottle out of a moving vehicle. He admitted consuming alcohol and failed field sobriety tests but refused to provide a breath sample at the station.

Christopher Holecsek, 34, of the first block of Golfview Road, Lake Zurich, was arrested on Nov. 2 and charged with retail theft at the Menard's, 6301 Oakton Street.

Anthony A. Lopez, 22, of the 100 block of Elm Street, Glenview, was arrested on Nov. 6 at a Cook County courthouse and charged with deceptive practice for attempting to deposit $9,651.29 in fraudulent checks drawn from a village account using a mobile banking app.

Christopher G. Gasiewski, 59, of the 6300 block of West Raven Street, Chicago, turned himself in on Nov. 6 in connection with a 2016 bond forfeiture warrant issued by McHenry County connected to a case of phone harassment involving a lewd comment. Subsequent to his arrest he faced a fresh charge of disorderly conduct in McHenry County.

Van Halen I. Subrean, 31, of the 1800 block of West Palm Drive, was arrested on Nov. 7 in the 6700 block of Howard Street by Niles police on a warrant related to a retail theft incident in Lincolnwood. He was turned over to Morton Grove police because he was also wanted in connection with an accusation of shoplifting from a Morton Grove business.

Dean C. Malambri, 49, of the 6800 block of Route 47, Woodstock, was arrested on Nov. 16 and charged with retail theft from TJ Maxx at 7250 Dempster St. for shoplifting miscellaneous items.

Robert B. Metellus, 32, of the 4600 block of Birchwood Avenue, Skokie, was arrested on Nov. 17 following a traffic stop in the area of Oakton Avenue and Menard Street and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and DUI with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or above after providing a breath sample indicating a BAC of 0.227.

Benito N. Ong, 68, of the 7800 block of Luna Avenue, Morton Grove, was arrested on Nov. 17 in his block of residence and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and DUI with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or above after being involved in a traffic crash and providing a breath sample indicating a BAC of 0.151.

Jonathan O. Pityou, 18, of the 9600 block of Golf Terrace, Des Plaines, was arrested Nov. 19 at the Morton Grove Police Department and charged with leaving the scene of a traffic crash.

Gabriel D. Bandy, 30, of the 2600 block of Louis Street, Franklin Park, was arrested Nov. 27 at the Morton Grove Police Department and charged with aggravated battery. He is accused of repeated punching a person in the face and head and causing broken bones and the person being taken to the hospital.

Anthony S. Duna, 22, of the 4900 block of West Belle Plaine Avenue, Chicago, was arrested on Nov. 28 at the Morton Grove Police Department and charged with electronic harassment. He is accused of sending harassing text messages, voicemails and social media messages to a person, threatening harm the person's family in connection with a previous incident.
