Celebrate Music with the Niles Public Library District

Niles Public Library District Celebrates Music with Live Performances and Album Cover Art Display

The Niles Public Library District will be hosting live music programs and accepting submissions for an album cover art display to celebrate the joy of music for all ages.

The Library will be kicking off the programs with Live Music Bibliobop with Miss Aimee Leigh on Friday, May 13 at 10am, which encourages families with kids of all ages to bring their dancing shoes and get ready for an exciting hour of wiggly fun.

Join the Library on Saturday, May 14 at 2pm to go on a musical tour of Brazil with the Luciano Antonio: Brazilian Quartet, where Lucian contrasts rich and complex harmonies and melodies. Offering dynamics ranging from pure solo guitar and voice to the full sound of Brazilian percussion.

On Saturday, May 21 at 2 pm, explore Arab musical tradition (turath) by listening to the classical Arab repertoire of the Khoury & Cami Duo, from Levant and Egypt. This duo performs with the two instruments that compromise the takht ensemble, the kamanjah (violin) and qanun. Chicago Reader music critic, Peter Margasak said, “Unless you travel to the Middle East, it’s hard to see this music played live—and nearly impossible to find an ensemble that can do it with such elegance and passion.”

Finally, to celebrate the resurgence of vinyl, the Library will be accepting submissions for artwork related to album covers on Friday, May 13 from 3-6pm and Saturday, May 14 from 12-3pm. Whether it’s original, mounted, collages, amateur, professionals, and everyone in between are welcome to turn in their work to be displayed in the Library’s Franklin Gallery from early June to mid July 11. To download the submission form, visit www.nileslibrary.org/exhibits.
