DUI Driver Had No Memory Of Crash; Unlicensed Ammo Found: Blotter

Incidents and arrests from the Niles Police Department blotter for Nov. 2 to Nov. 20.

NILES, IL — The following information comes from the Niles Police Department as a record of police activity and those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent mere accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. All persons named are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

INCIDENTS

STOLEN CARS

  • An employee of a business in the 8600 block of Milwaukee Avenue reportedly refused to return a white Honda van used for work after being terminated on Oct. 26. The employee demanded $20,000, and his employer called the police on the night of Nov. 1.
  • Three teens in a stolen car triggered a multi vehicle accident around 2 p.m. on Nov. 8 in the area of West Oakton Street and North Oconto Avenue. More info...

HOME BURGLARY ATTEMPT
A resident in the 8600 block of North Olcott Avenue reported shortly before 6:30 a.m. on Nov. 6 that they discovered a person in a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants and black baseball hat peaking around their home and their neighbor's home.

DOMESTIC BATTERY
Shortly after 7 p.m. on Nov. 12, police were called to the area of West Oakton Street and North Harlem Avenue for a report of domestic battery. Police were told a woman reported she was dropping off some items in Chicago to an ex-partner with her daughter in the car. The man, who was reportedly drunk, pointed a black plastic gun at the woman, threatened to kill her and physically assaulted her before getting out of her car and fleeing on foot.

HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER STRIKES PEDESTRIANS
Around 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 13, two juveniles in the 8300 block of North Greenwood Avenue told police they had been walking north on Greenwood at Normal Avenue when a black, four-door Subaru sedan travelling west on Normal struck them with the front end. The car stopped briefly before driving away on Normal. The juveniles suffered scrapes with no major injuries.

HOME BURGLARIES

  • A resident in the 8000 block of North Oconto Avenue reported around 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 16 that they returned home to find their front door had been forced open. Several pieces of jewelry were reported stolen.
  • Someone broke into a home in the 70100 block of West Dobson Street between 6 p.m. Nov. 17 and 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 18.


ARRESTS

Anthony M. Marin, 32, of the 7900 block of West Oakton Street, Niles, was arrested around 11 p.m. on Nov. 2 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after police pulled him over for doing 61 mph in a 35 mph zone on the road near his home. He smelled strongly of alcohol and admitted consuming two shots of liquor and two beers at a bar.

Elvis Roman, 23, of the 1800 block of North Mozart Street, Chicago, was arrested around 5:15 a.m. on Nov. 3 in the 7500 block of North Milwaukee Avenue after officers investigated a traffic crash. Police determined a vehicle struck a light pole and began to start smoking. A witness said he pulled two people out of the vehicle. The driver said he did not recall the crash, while a passenger said they had been driving home from a party where they had a lot to drink. Officers found an open bottle of Hennessy in the center console.

Marcus W. Taylor, 49, of the 3500 block of South State Street, Chicago, and Eric Collier, 44, of the 3700 block of West Ogden Avenue, Chicago, were arrested and charged with felony retail theft and resisting arrest of a police officer at the Golf Mill JCPenny after they were seen stealing $620 worth of shoes. The men also had an active arrest warrant issued by Chicago police.

John E. Ashford, 24, of the 5100 block of Barry Avenue, Chciago, was arrested around 1:15 a.m. on Nov. 8 in the 8800 block of West Golf Road and charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of drug paraphernalia. Officers noticed an occupied car in the lot with its lights on and search its occupants and the car. They found two digital scales with residue of a green leafy substance along with a box of 100 9mm bullets. Ashford did not have a valid firearms owner's identification card.

Jaroslaw Pijanowski, 62, of the 5900 block of North Northwest Highway, Chicago, was arrested around 12:45 p.m. on Nov. 16 following a traffic stop in the 6700 block of West Touhy Avenue for improper lane usage. The driver smelled strongly of alcohol and told police he had consumed a bottle of DayQuil. He was charged with DUI – alcohol and DUI – alcohol with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or more.

Ataf M. Mustafa, 38, of the 5700 block of West Montrose Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 1:44 p.m. on Nov. 18 and charged with retail theft at the Target, 6150 W. Touhy Ave. Staff reportedly saw him swapping price tags from travel sized deodorant and putting them on various items with a value of about $325.
