Maine East Theatre students will delight audiences with a trip back to the Roaring Twenties through their presentation of the musical comedy “Thoroughly Modern Millie” on Friday, March 2, Saturday, March 3, Friday, March 9 and Saturday, March 10. All performances will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Set in the flapper era, this production features a cast of 42 East students, whom Director Karen Hall describes as an “awesome group of kids. They are so hard-working and energetic and have great talent.”
Hall, a Maine East Fine Arts teacher, said: “What I love about this show is that it’s a throwback to good old-fashioned musicals: Boy meets girl; boy loses girl; boy gets girl back. There is lots of great comedy and lots of great music.”

And as is true of many of the school’s endeavors, Maine East’s vibrant diversity will be on display. “When I looking at the leads – the roles of Millie (Marianna Veneri) and Jimmy (Mynor Pelaez) in this All- American musical – I love that that he’s from Guatemala, and she’s from Greece, and that less than three years ago they literally weren’t speaking English. They are two of the most incredibly talented kids you’ll ever see on stage. It’s such a cool thing.”
Audiences may be familiar with the show from the Academy-nominated 1967 movie by the same name starring Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Channing.
